Turtle Tagging Activity: A Milestone for Turtle Conservation in Anambas Islands

In early June, the Anambas Foundation, in collaboration with LKKPN Pekanbaru (Marine Protected Area Management Body), hosted a turtle tagging workshop at Teluk Sadang Beach. The workshop garnered participation from 18 individuals, including dedicated turtle rangers actively engaged in our Turtle Conservation initiative across the Anambas Islands.

The primary objective of this workshop was to provide comprehensive training to the rangers on the proper techniques for tagging sea turtles that frequent Anambas shores for nesting. The turtle tagging activity is the first in Anambas Islands and it is pivotal in enhancing our understanding of turtle populations and their migration behaviors.

Utilizing flipper tags, the most widely accepted method for tagging, we affixed metal tags bearing unique identification numbers onto the flippers of the sea turtles. This approach involves piercing the flipper with the tag, ensuring minimal disruption to the turtles’ natural activities. To date, our efforts have resulted in the successful tagging of five green turtles and one hawksbill turtle, accomplished during our concurrent turtle egg rescue operations.

Funding for our Turtle Conservation initiative is made possible through generous grants provided by State Of The World’s Sea Turtle, Conservation Nation, and the Rufford Foundation. Learn more about the initiative here.
