COMMUNITY-BASED REFORESTATION

The management status of Bawah Island is unique. Although it is not a conservation area, the management practices have been very conservationist. The construction, for instance, was completed to create as little impact to existing flora and fauna by not using large machinery. Natural material sources are used sustainably as far as possible with minimum disruption to the local habitat.

In order to assess and therefore use a practical approach to manage a small island ecosystem, it is necessary to have a baseline knowledge of the flora and vegetation. Unfortunately, studies to formulate a plan for sustainable management and biodiversity conservation are insufficient. However, Bawah Anambas Foundation and forester team led by Prof. Tukirin Partomihardjo have done the identification of vegetation including key endangered indigenous species in Bawah Island. In the future, BAF is planning to collaborate with the District Forestry Office to create community-based nurseries for restoration not only Bawah but also other islands in the Anambas.
