Turtle Conservation
The Anambas Islands still grapples with the illegal trade of turtle eggs. We partner up with a community-based conservation group called Penyu Jemaja Lestari whose work focuses on rescuing turtle eggs and protecting turtles in Teluk Dalam, Sunggak of West Jemaja. The main activities of the Turtle Conservation initiative are regular monitoring, researching and raising awareness. To carry out these activities, we chose several people from the community who were former illegal egg traders. We trained, educated and provided them with an alternative source of income and turned them into rangers who are protecting the turtle populations in the area.
