INTEGRATED WASTE MANAGEMENT

Integrated Waste Management

As a small-island region, the Anambas Islands face persistent waste management challenges driven by limited land availability, high transportation costs, and inadequate waste infrastructure. These conditions contribute to waste leakage into coastal and marine ecosystems, threatening both environmental health and community well-being.

The Anambas Foundation's Integrated Waste Management program supports community participation in sustainable waste management systems through improved waste collection, recycling, behaviour change, and local environmental action. Working closely with villages, schools, and local governments, the program promotes community-based solutions such as Waste Banks, mobile waste collection, plastic upcycling, and environmental education to strengthen local ownership of waste management.

By reducing pollution and improving waste management practices, the program contributes to healthier coastal ecosystems, stronger community stewardship, and more resilient island communities while supporting the Foundation's vision of sustainable development in the Anambas Islands.

Education is a fundamental component of the Anambas Foundation's Integrated Waste Management program, fostering environmental awareness and encouraging long-term behaviour change across communities. Through school-based activities, community outreach, practical training, and public campaigns, the program equips children, youth, and adults with the knowledge and skills to reduce, sort, and manage waste responsibly.

Participants learn practical waste management practices, including waste segregation, recycling, and circular economy principles, while gaining a deeper understanding of the connection between responsible waste management, healthy ecosystems, and resilient island communities. Initiatives such as Generasi Merdeka Sampah further inspire individuals to become active environmental stewards and promote sustainable practices within their homes, schools, and villages.
